dealing with narcolepsy, wedding planning, a law degree and some new fitness goals…

medication.. finally!

After receiving my official diagnosis in August 2012, I met with the sleep specialist and commenced medication.

The most popular treatment in Australia for narcolepsy is administering one of two drugs.  Dexamphetamine or Modafinil.  You need special approval to get a script for this medication as it is restricted.  So after a quick call to someone “magic” in Canberra, my script was approved and I was on my merry way.

Interestingly my specialist warned me about telling anyone that I am taking dex.  It is a drug that works in a similar way to speed and as such it comes hand in hand with certain stigmas.  This attitude frustrates me slightly, personally I am of the view that the only way to break down stigmas and ignorance is through education and understanding.

So, in the interests of breaking down barriers, keeping fellow narcoleptics informed and well frankly, just plain honesty.  I am not trying to hide the medication I am on.  Whilst I certainly don’t go shouting it from the rooftops, I answer questions about it when asked and have documented my progress in an honest an open fashion.

You can read about my initial reactions to the medication here.
